General Motors Company (often abbreviated as GM) is a global American
automotive corporation. With its corporate headquarters in Detroit, Michigan,
it is widely considered to be the largest automaker in the world. Founded on
September 16, 1908 by William C. Durant and Frederic L. Smith, the company now
owns some 18 car brands including Cadillac, Buick, Chevrolet, Corvette and GMC.
The current version of the GM logo features the company’s name in a simple
blue-and-white color scheme with a line underneath. Unveiled in 1966, an
earlier version of the logo included the phrase “Mark of Excellence”, however
its appearance was discontinued by the late 1970s. The “Mark of Excellence”
logo of the General Motors Corporation is widely regarded as one of the most
memorable and instantly recognizable car logos in history. While the blue color
depicts the excellence and trustworthiness of General Motors, the white color
stands for its purity, charm and integrity. The GM logo features a slightly
modified form of the classic Helvetica typeface.
